We Will Rock You

Mayhem's production for February 2022 was another outstanding success, with multiple NODA reviews and more recognition:

  •     Best Youth Production - Mayhem Youth Theatre Group for We Will Rock You

  •     Best Youth Performance - Liam Phelps for the part of Brit in We Will Rock You

Some highlights from the NODA reviews were:

"Dedicated and enthusiastic, this young company gave a brilliant interpretation, their stagecraft and precision of the well positioned groups on stage shone, golden voiced Lucy Friend who also played Scaramouche, is to be congratulated on her direction and choreography, entrusted by Mayhem with this rock musical, it just goes to show how youngsters can excel when given the opportunity."

"All the characters were very well cast and multi talented to play diverse dual parts at different performances through the week. Powerful, excellent performances were given by the outstanding  Liam Phelps as Khashoggi and Brit, Galileo (Jack Davies and Harry Cummins), Killer Queen (Lucy Edmunds and Gracie Powell), Scaramouche (Lucy Friend and Rachel Harkins) Khashoggi (Archie Cowton) also all gave fantastic interpretations.

"Galileo and Scaramouche played by Jack Davies & Lucy Friend were well cast. Coping with Queens music isn’t easy at all, let alone the script work as well! I was impressed with their stage presence and carried the performance overall. Supporting them were Lucy Edmunds as Killer Queen, Archie Cowton as Khashoggi, Erin Crossley as Buddy, and Megan Fairman-Foster as Ga Ga Kid. Each of whom gave absolutely everything to their roles which was really pleasing. I have to mention Liam Phelps, who played Brit with determination I have never seen in a youth production before. Every time he was on stage, I was drawn to him, even in the mega mix at the end. If there is one bit of advice I can give to any aspiring performer is to understand your role, research and take your chance when it comes and Liam did this all night! He is definitely one to watch to the future! "

WE WILL ROCK YOU tells the story of a globalized future without musical instruments. A handful of rock rebels, the Bohemians, fight against the all-powerful Globalsoft company and its boss, the Killer Queen; they fight for freedom, individuality and the rebirth of the age of rock. Scaramouche and Galileo, two young outsiders, cannot come to terms with the bleak conformist reality. They join the Bohemians and embark on the search to find the unlimited power of freedom, love and Rock!

The idea for the musical came after a meeting between the actor Robert De Niro with musicians Brian May and Roger Taylor, in Venice in 1996. De Niro's daughter was a big fan of the Queen and the actor asked if the legends of rock had never thought of creating a musical based on their songs. That was the beginning of everything.

Since 2002 over 15 million theatregoers in 17 countries have been thrilled by this awe-inspiring production which is based on the songs of Queen with a book by Ben Elton (The Young Ones, Blackadder, Popcorn). Elton fashioned this hilarious futurist comedy around more than 20 of Queen’s biggest hit songs including We Are The Champions, Radio Ga Ga, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, Don’t Stop Me Now, Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust and of course, We Will Rock You.
